What Shelter Dogs and Home Buyers Have in Common

At first glance, not much.

One is looking for a family. The other is looking for a house.

But after years in real estate and years of supporting rescue and shelter pets, I've realized they actually have a lot in common.

One of the biggest mistakes I see home buyers make is thinking they have to find the "perfect" house.

The perfect house doesn't exist.

Just like the perfect dog doesn't exist.

Every shelter dog has a story. Some have scars. Some need a little extra patience. Some get overlooked because people are focused on appearances, age, or something small they can't get past.

Homes are a lot like that.

I've shown beautiful homes that looked perfect online but weren't right once we walked through the door. I've also shown homes that buyers almost skipped because the pictures weren't great, only to have them fall completely in love the moment they stepped inside.

Sometimes the best fit isn't the one that checks every box.

Sometimes it's the one that simply feels right.

Another thing shelter dogs and home buyers have in common?

Waiting.

I meet people all the time who are waiting for the perfect market, the perfect interest rate, the perfect time, or the perfect amount of money saved.

The truth is, just like there will never be a perfect dog, there will never be a perfect time.

That doesn't mean you should rush into buying a home. It just means you shouldn't assume homeownership is out of reach without finding out what your options are.

Some buyers are ready now.

Some need a plan.

Some need six months.

Some need a year.

But you'll never know where you stand if you never ask.
